How to save money on airport travel: Birmingham to Heathrow

Heading to Heathrow? Don’t let getting to the airport drain your holiday budget. Whether you're off on a weekend city break or a long-haul adventure, there’s a smart way to save money—ditch the pricey train fares and extortionate parking fees and hop on a National Express coach instead.

Here’s how to get there for less, with zero stress.

Coach vs. Car vs. Train: What’s the Cheapest Way?

Let’s break it down:

Coach – From as little as £7 one-way (for travel from 19 April onwards), you’ll get a comfy ride straight to Heathrow no fuel costs, no parking fees, no hassle. Bonus: luggage travels free.

Driving + Parking – Heathrow parking can set you back £40+ per day or £200+ per week for long-stay. And that’s before factoring in petrol and the fun of navigating airport traffic.

Train – A direct train ticket from Birmingham to London can cost £50+ one way in peak hours, plus it takes 2 hours 15 minutes which is faster than the train all before you even factor in the extra cost and time of getting to Heathrow from the station.

How to Score the Cheapest Tickets

Book in Advance – The earlier you book, the better the price. Unlike trains, coach fares stay refreshingly reasonable.

Get a Coachcard – If you're a student, senior, or under 30, a National Express Coachcard gets you 1/3 off fares all year round.

Look Out for Deals – Keep an eye on the National Express website for flash sales and promo codes.

Luggage Perks: No Hidden Fees

Unlike some transport options (looking at you, train companies), National Express lets you bring one large suitcase (up to 20kg) and one piece of hand luggage (up to 10kg) free of charge. That means no last-minute repacking or extra fees for an extra bag.

Skip the Stress, Save Your Cash

Why spend a fortune before you’ve even taken off? The coach is the easiest, cheapest way to Heathrow just sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving.
